US pledges $1.4m for refugees in Nepal
(PTI) The United States government has promised US$1.15 million (UK£654,672; EUR€942,856) for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees' (UNHCR) 2006 annual budget programme for Nepal to assist Bhutanese refugees. It has also allocated US$250,000 (UK£142,320; EUR€204,968) to provide support for newly arrived Tibetan refugees in Kathmandu. This has brought the total contribution by the US to US$1.4 million (UK£796,992; EUR€1,147,825) towards the UN's refugees programme in Nepal, according to a statement issued by the UNHCR in Kathmandu. The refugee agency protects and assists newly arrived Tibetans in transit through Nepal as well as helping some 105,000 Bhutanese refugees sheltering in seven camps in eastern Nepal since the early 1990s.
