First half 06 TAR tourism figures released
(Xinhua) The TAR received 591,200 tourists in the first half of 2006, generating an income of 516 million Yuan (UKŁ33.7m; US$ 64.5m; EUR€50m), Jampa Phuntsog, chairman of the TAR announced. Mr Phuntsog has asked for infrastructure development in the second half of 2006 to increase capacity at certain tourist sites. He also announced that 78,000 tourists visited Tibet from 01-06 July. Relevant departments, including Lhasa Tourism Bureau, forecast that in the second half of 2006, the TAR will receive 2 million tourists and a total of 2.6 million tourists will visit Tibet in 2006.
