China announces 20-year environmental protection plan for Tibet
(Xinhua) The Chinese government has announced plans to spend more than 20 billion Yuan (UKŁ1.27bn; US$2.63bn; EUR€1.9bn) on environmental protection measures on the Tibet Plateau, according to an official with the development and reform commission of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). The expenditure will fund projects that include the “construction of nature reserves, protection of natural forests, restoration of grassland and pastures". The plan, which also includes measures like "harnessing and prevention of desertification and the prevention of geological disasters”, is to be approved soon and will last for about 20 years.
